A fiery and welcome addition to Lothian Road’s food scene, Topolabamba has finally opened its doors in Edinburgh. Its tapas style menu is perfect for all appetites, and the exciting list of tequilas raises Topolabamba’s flag as a must-visit bar to set you up for a night-time fiesta.
I like the way food is served here, it comes as and when it’s ready – so don’t expect all of your plates to arrive at once. Each table has a tiny shot glass holding a couple of branded pencils. Don’t worry, you’re encouraged to draw all over the menu – in fact it’s pretty handy when all of your bits and pieces arrive to remind yourself of what you ordered.
The chicken tinga taco was pretty special, and I wouldn’t hesitate to order it again. I chose from the street food section of the menu, but you can also pick from classics or bigger dishes. Look out for the traffic light in the restaurant – it’ll indicate how hot the green chilies being used in the kitchen are that day. The hotter the better!
They recommend three or four plates, but both of us struggled! Two would have been perfect, and I might even have ordered a dessert afterwards (because they sounded incredible).
For me, Topolabamba is most likely going to become the place I go for tortilla chips and guac, a few tequilas and maybe a margarita with friends before a night out (probably to El Barrio or Garibaldi’s, persuaded by the restaurant’s music!). The staff are great too – and they even have this nice little feature on the bill which works out the average price per person. No more smartphone calculators necessary.
