Having a mid-week birthday makes it easier to get away with a prolonged celebration, and that’s exactly what I did! I’m officially in my ‘late-20s’ now, and I celebrated with two birthday cakes, lots of partying and my first ever massage. That’s right, it’s taken 27 years for me to check that one off my list!
My Mum is the queen of parties and celebrations, so you can imagine how nice the house looked when I turned up on that cold and rainy evening after work. Birthday banners and balloons, fairy lights and a stunning multi-layered birthday cake made everything feel so special. The family all came round for party food, Mum’s homemade stovies and of course, presents!
I’m not sure what made me add this co-ord to my wish list, but there it was unwrapped in front of me and I knew I was going to have to summon the confidence to wear it from somewhere! I decided to try it out the following night on my actual birthday to my boyfriend’s gig. It was everything I ever wanted it to be, and I also had my traditional birthday zombie cocktail the same night. I looked so very 80s.
On day three of my extended birthday celebration, Mum and I went to Six by Nico for the mad hatter’s tea party tasting menu. It did not disappoint! I absolutely loved that it started with an empire biscuit, my favourite thing ever, in an oh so cheesy form.
I’ve always wanted to treat myself to a massage, but I’m good at finding reasons not to. At last, as a birthday present to myself, I allowed myself a modest 30 minute massage to help me unwind. It worked a treat, and I went home to enjoy a delicious cooked meal with Naveed (lamb dal!). The following night my friends came round for prosecco and a Mimi’s cake before we headed out to Cowgate for drinks and dancing!
It’s taken me longer than usual to write my birthday blog this year and, like much of my writing over the past few months, I haven’t put much into it. I’m out of my habit a little and taking a small break after four years of non-stop writing in my previous job, but I feel like I’ll get back into it in 2020. Meanwhile, I’ve been putting my creative efforts into experimenting with short videos and designing my first ever Christmas cards! I wonder what new things 27 will bring?
